Pattern Category: Places Series: Shell Border, Circular Center Object Type: Dinner and Dessert Wares Dimensions: Description:
Shown on a plate, Trenton Falls is located on the West Canada Creek, north of Utica, NY in Oneida County. For much of the 19th century this location rivalled Niagara as a tourist destination. In 1806 John Sherman, a grandson of Roger Sherman of Connecticut who signed the Declaration of Independence, moved to Trenton and by the 1820s had established a resort by the falls which attracted many of the rich and famous of the time. This version shows three people standing on a rock to the left of the falls; a second version (also included in this exhibit) has one man standing at the foot of the falls. The view is also found on a 6.5 inch plate.
