The pattern on this plate is also known in a version with the Two Medallion Portrait border.  (See that version, Hospital Boston #1, in this exhibit). Massachusetts General Hospital was designed by Charles Bulfinch and built on the banks of the Charles River; the cornerstone was laid with great ceremony on July 4, 1818.
