Series: America and Independence

Alternate Names: Mansion, foreground a lake with swans

Object Type: Dinner and Dessert Wares

Dimensions:

  • Diameter: 16.75 inches

Description:

The series to which this platter belongs is also called The States Series, as well as The States Border Series, due to the states named in the border.  There are a number of different center views.  On the left is a medallion portrait of George Washington, held by Lady Justice.  Lady Liberty is on the opposite side.  There is also a Masonic symbol.  Most pieces bear the impressed Clews mark on the reverse.   This is the only known form on which this particular view appears.

Recent discoveries and the research efforts of author and lecturer Dick Henrywood indicate that all of the center views in this series are British.  The source prints for these views have led to the specific identification of all the structures, save this one which remains unknown pending further research.  This view appears in an article by Dick Henrywood in Ceramics in America 2011, entitled "The States Border Series by Ralph & James Clews", as figure 15 on p. 109.
