Description:

This  plate  shows a view of Albany, New York.   The trading post of Fort Orange was established by Dutch settlers in 1642.  The nearby settlement of Beverwyck (Beaver Island) was renamed Albany by the English when they conquered New Amsterdam in 1664.  The Van Rensselaer family were the patroons, or lords, of the great feudal estate of Rensselaerswyck, which endured for over two centuries until the Anti-Rent movement of the 1840s, centered in Albany, ended the Dutch patroon system.
