Welcome La Fayette The Nation's Guest and our Country's Glory #2

Shown below is a second version of this pattern with a molded border and edge painted with a green ground.

Pattern Category: Heraldic and Commemorative

Object Type: Dinner and Dessert Wares

Dimensions:

  • Length: 19 inches
  • Width: 14.5 inches

Description:

While this plate has a slightly different portrait of La Fayette, it, too, was probably made as a souvenir to commemorate La Fayette's visit to the US in 1824-25.  Based on a portrait by Geille and printed by The Elder Chardon, this is referred to as the Yorktown Portrait and shows La Fayette in uniform.  While the uniform is the same in various views, the face was changed by every potter and from form to form by the same potter.

Below is an interesting variation of this portrait piece, with a green border.  It has the same circular crown mark as on the platter.
