Pattern Category: Heraldic and Commemorative Series: Medallion Portrait Object Type: Wares for Coffee and Tea Dimensions: Considered Rare Description:
Here is one of the scarcest cup plates in historical Staffordshire. It is made by Ralph Stevenson & Williams from their Acorn and Oak Leaves border series as well as part of the Medallion Portrait series. Note the portrait of Washington is the same as on other Medallion Portrait pieces. References seem to indicate that there is only one known example (in a museum). It also has occurred to some authors that there may be medallion portrait cup plates of the other three popular personages, La Fayette, Clinton and Jefferson, who are seen on multiple image medallion pieces. There also may be small plates that bear this image in the center. This particular plate is a part of the Larson collection housed at the Smithsonian Museum.
