Insane Asylum, New York

  • Height: 6.75 inches

Description:

This pitcher shows a view of the New York Insane Asylum.   The building is actually the Bloomingdale Lunatic Asylum, opened in 1821.   Bloomingdale Road, which led from the city of New York to the asylum, is now Broadway.  The bulk of the institution's property was bought by Columbia College in 1892 for its new campus and the asylum moved to White Plains.  The view on the reverse is City Hall, New York.  See a differently shaped pitcher with the same views in Shapes.
