Description:

Shown here on a plate, this version of Hospital Boston by Ralph Stevenson & Son, incorporates the portraits of Thomas Jefferson and General Lafayette. (“Welcome Lafayette, The Nation's Guest”).  Andrew Stevenson produced a Medallion Portrait series, using English center views and a Wild Rose Border.  Medallion Portrait Series was also produced by Stevenson in the Acorn and Oak Leaf Border Series. Most of the  portrait plates also have an inserted vignette of the Erie Canal, here, a View of the Aqueduct Bridge at Little Falls.  Stevenson's view here was also produced without the medallions, in the same Vine Border and a similar mark except bearing the initials RS.  See that version (Hospital Boston #2) in this exhibit under Places.

While this is also part of the Vine border series, we have listed it under the Medallion Portrait Series with the other medallion pieces.
