Description:

This platter shows the Massachusetts state seal adopted in 1780.  The state motto, Ense petit placidum sub libertate quietam, or By the sword we seek peace (but only) under liberty  - is attributed to the 17th century English patriot Algernon Sydney, whose writings, it is thought, influenced the earliest American patriots.
