The work was the result of collaboration between the Dublin born, William Guy Wall and London born, John Hill, who both moved to America in the early 19th century. The Portfolio's twenty topographical views were among the first images to celebrate America’s natural beauty. Their value was immediately recognized by those who wanted to provide goods that appealed to American sensibilities, and at least two potters used the images on their blue printed wares.
