Description:

The scene on this platter is intended to denote American patriotism.  Depicted is the Roman citizen soldier Cincinnatus, who in 460 BC was created dictator to battle a threat against Rome.  In 16 days he defeated Rome's foe, gave up his dictatorship and returned to his farm.  This example of selfless service to his republic became a model for the Founding Fathers.  George Washington was called the American Cincinnatus as he too returned to private life after the Revolution.  He and many of his fellow officers formed the Order of the Cincinnati, which was instrumental in the founding of many towns west of the Appalachians, including Cincinnati, OH and Pittsburgh, PA.
