Description:

This platter shows the town of Louisville, Kentucky, laid out beside the Ohio River in 1779 and named for Louis XVI of France, then a great friend to the colonists fighting for independence from Great Britain.  After a canal was built around the falls on the Ohio near Louisville, and travel by steamboat had become practical, the town grew rapidly and was soon the largest city in the state.
