Seen here on this platter is the full view of the New York Harbor and Castle Garden Battery, the same structure which appears in many of Enoch Wood's NY Harbor views, as well as the structure in the Landing of La Fayette series. Located at the southern tip of Manhattan, the Battery took its name from the artillery installed there at various times by the Dutch and British, but has also been a popular promenade since the 17th century. The Southwest Battery was constructed on a ledge of rocks 300 feet offshore just prior to the War of 1812, but never saw action, and was renamed Castle Clinton after DeWitt Clinton in 1817. The army vacated the fort and by 1824 it had become a popular restaurant and entertainment center known as Castle Garden. Lafayette was officially received here on his revisit in 1824.  This view comes in three sizes of platters.
