Description:

This square dish shows the arms of the state of Virginia.  The center view shows Virtue, representing the State, standing on Tyranny, a man stretched on the ground, a crown fallen from his head, a scourge and broken chain still in his hands.  The state motto, Sic Semper Tyrannis - Thus always with tyrants - is attributed originally to Brutus at the assassination of Julius Caesar. Ironically witnesses also claimed to have heard John Wilkes Booth say it following his assassination of Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theater.
